“Entitled “Post-African Healing”, this interactive program will give us opportunities to experience, enjoy, and reflect upon our entwined destinies as inhabitants of this so-called “New World”. Using banjo, tambourine, ukulele, story and song—plus a shaken tail-feather or two—we’ll sing, clap and bring new life to ancient tales and treasured tunes.
Former archivist at the Schomburg Center in New York, as well as the World Bank, I”m also an educator and author of The Drummer’s Path: Moving the Spirit with Ritual and Traditional Drumming. I’ve performed with Babatunde Olatunji, Tony Trischka and Taj Mahal, guested at Yale and UCLA, appeared in documentaries, and brought together the band that became the Grammy-award winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. Born and raised in Washington, DC, I now reside in sunny Tempe, AZ.
Through experience comes, we hope, growth. My work is planting seeds, providing experiences that take people safely beyond their comfort zones, into deeper and broader perceptions, and perspectives, and back again.
